Who are we?

Nelson Tenants Union are local residents working to change the conversation around housing, helping neighbours in crisis, reconnecting our community through collective action, and helping renters build the power they need to regain control of their housing.

Together, we can build a better home for ourselves, our friends, our family, our neighbours, and generations to come!

Solidarity and values

  • Housing is a human right. Housing should be free to every person at the point of use.

  • We recognize this land is stolen land and support Indigenous people in their struggle for self-determination. Our government and economy have sustained themselves off of the control and exploitation of that land.

  • We are an organizing union. We recognize that power grows from active, organized struggle and the development of class consciousness.

  • We believe in and support working class power. We are stronger when we build our own structures designed to bring democracy back into our everyday lives.

  • For-profit housing is wrong. The solutions presented by proponents of commodified housing are making things worse and further removing people and communities from control of their housing.

  • As members of the union we must support each other. We prioritize creating networks of mutual aid and commit to providing material support to help each other in our collective struggle.

  • For-profit systems limit access to housing and create the resulting economic environment that drives people out of their homes and into homelessness. We must continually affirm our solidarity with unhoused and underhoused people.

Our goals

From urgent aid to tenants in crisis to working towards practical solutions that decommodify housing, Nelson Tenants Union strives to ensure everyone in our community has a roof over their head without exploitation.

Our goal is to build and maintain networks of community mutual aid and care that empower everyday people to connect and build power to change the housing paradigm. Whether you’re looking to learn about housing, to connect with others, organize roommates and neighbours, learn how to build community, or to attend an event or action, this is the place for you.

No matter your experience, you can take part in the organizing process. Contact us today to engage in building community where you are.
